Grassland Grange has maintained a completely closed herd since 1989. The definition of a closed herd is a herd in which no outside breeding stock (cattle) are introduced. Research indicates that the number one culprit for disease entry into a herd is the introduction of new animals. Maintaining a closed system eliminates this risk, and significantly reduces the opportunities for disease. This promotes viral stability and results in a higher state of herd health. As a result the herd produces overall healthier, stronger animals all the way through finishing.
